Kiteboarding is a surface water sport combining aspects of wakeboarding, windsurfing, surfing, paragliding, and gymnastics into one extreme sport. A kiteboarder harnesses the power of the wind with a large controllable power kite to be propelled across the water on a kiteboard similar to a wakeboard or a small surfboard, with or without foot straps or bindings.
Warning!Kiteboarding is a dangerous sport. We highly recommend professional instruction before you attempt flying a big kite.Do not take lessons from non-certified instructors! All our instructors are IKO certified and insured.
How do I get started?
Beginner kiteboarding lessons consist of three courses:
- Land Beginner Level 1
- Body Drag Beginner Level 2
- Water Ride Beginner Level 3
- Each course is two to three hours long. You will spend your first lesson on the beach learning to set up and fly the kite. In your second lesson, you will learn how to control the power of the kite to pull your body through the water(The power stroke). In your third lesson, you will learn how to stand up on the board and possibly ride.

Why choose a package?
Kiteboarding is not a sport that you can learn in one or even two lessons. If you are serious about learning to kiteboard, we recommend booking our course packages to get the best value for your money.
- 6 hours will take you from basic kite flying on land to your first water starts and possibly your first short ride.
- 9 hours will give you more time to perfect your water starts and more time to ride while learning to ride the edge of your board.

Who should take an Intermediate lesson?
You should take an intermediate lesson if you are an independent kiteboarder interested in building confidence, learning new freestyle tricks, or learning how to maneuver in ocean waves. We want you to reach your goals! The possibilities in kiteboarding are infinite and a little instruction goes a long way! See our advanced page for more details on what you could be working on to improve your skills and deepen your experiences with the sport of kiteboarding.

What should I know?
- Lessons are predominantly held in Tableview, Big bay and Muizenberg. We may also run lessons in Langebaan for the waterstart lessons
- All equipment is included for lessons: Kites, boards, helmets, floatation vests, harnesses and wetsuits.
- Don’t forget your sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and your own wetsuit if you have one. If you don’t, we will supply one.
- All lessons are conducted under IKO (International Kiteboarding Organization) methods and standards for teaching.
- Safety is our priority! Upon completion of your course, you will receive an IKO card indicating your level of completion.
- Kiteboarding is a sport dependent upon mother nature. All lessons are subject to wind availability. If there is no wind, unfortunately, we are unable to offer lessons. It is best to book early in the season to ensure that you will be able to complete your course.
- If a course cannot be completed due to natural conditions, we will credit you the remainder of your package and book you in for the following season.
- Kiteboarding is a dangerous sport. Anyone taking lessons with SA Kitesurf will be required to sign an indemnity form.
Everyone progresses at their own pace, but generally, 6 or 9 hour packages are recommended for beginners who are serious about learning to safely, independently kiteboard. - Group lessons (two people sharing one kite) are just as, if not more, beneficial than private lessons. In a group lesson, you have the opportunity to observe your partner and learn from his/her mistakes. And group lessons allow for more time.
- Most importantly, we want you to have fun and enjoy yourself! That is a requirement!
Hope to see you on the water soon!
